Bedford Avenue is one of the longest streets in New York City, running nearly the full length of Brooklyn. It's a vital corridor that handles a lot of traffic of all kinds (many many peds, bikes, cars, buses, and trucks) and is truly representative of the different neighborhoods through which it travels.

So it was particularly saddening to see this happening, this morning...

It's pretty clear once you get past Flushing where the bike icons have been removed that, as a cyclist, you are not welcome here. So sad, I love Bedford Avenue for its vibrancy, especially in this part of the city. It's hard to be made unwelcome in a neighborhood you like.

Local coalition vows to fight for living wage with Kingsbridge Armory Development

"The strong local opposition comes as something of a surprise."

Why? Many members of the coalition originally fought for development of Kingsbridge Armory but will abandon support of the project if it doesn't come with a living wage. It's sad that a living wage in New York City is NOT market wage.

"...a pledge to pay more than the market rate would be a death sentence for the project," says a developers spokesman.

Those who play by market rules have obviously figured out how to build big box in New York City. The jobs are welcome at first; the amenities as well. City Planning approves it as a development opportunity, hoping to spur on local business. But then you find out the jobs don't pay a living wage. As the community lives with the unveiled development, it starts to feel the negative impacts of having the development in their neighborhoods: increased traffic, diminished pedestrian experience, a shriveled public life. We're only beginning to learn how to track the physical impacts of such incongruous buildings.

First Gateway Center in the South Bronx. Then East Harlem Plaza. I hope that the Bronx community sticks to its guns on the Kingsbridge project. After the greenlight from the City, the marketplace players can forget all the promises they've made.

The Brno Biennial showcases the very best of graphic design.

The Brno Biennial was established in 1963, and is thus the oldest exhibition of graphic design in the world. It regularly alternates between two subjects. The 23rd year will be dedicated to graphic design, illustration and type in books, magazines, newspapers and the digital media, while the 2010 Biennial will focus on corporate, informational and advertising graphics and posters.

Apart from the main competition show, the Brno Biennial features a specialist symposium and a number of accompanying events, thanks to which Brno becomes a major centre of contemporary graphic design for four months.

Apparently the price of glucose, the main ingredient in Gummi Bears, rose some 30% in 2006. Analysts claim that this is due in part to the increasing interest in bio fuels, which could raise food prices across the board as more land is diverted to grow crops for bio fuels instead of for food. This increase in the cost of glucose is threatening to raise the price of Gummi Bears. Haribo, the manufacturer of Gummi Bears is concerned that if the trend continues, Gummi Bears may become so expensive that they end up becoming a gourmet luxury food that only the rich can afford. Say it ain’t so hoe!

It's a full week in the NYC public space sphere.

Monday night, go to the second of the DOT's public input sessions on Broadway, including the pedestrian islands and bike lanes that run from Columbus Circle to 23rd Street and the "Greenlight for Midtown" project (aka, the coolest, most innovative public realm change this year). For those who tell me they are too busy to click through to event details here they are: Broadway Public Feedback Session, 6-8PM, New Yorker Hotel, 481 8th Ave at 34th Street. Seriously, if you like this project at all, please come out and say so. Public meetings have a tendency to attract the "no's" so if you're more of a "yes", please come out. I know that people want to pick apart the dots, the lanes, the chairs, and every other little thing, so if you're so inclined, you should first read this article by Michael Beirut and then go back to Times Square, stand on Broaday and simply enjoy watching people fill in all the space that used to go to cars.

Tuesday night is the opening night for the international conference on pedestrians, Walk 21. There's loads of great sessions at the conference which runs from Wednesday to Friday this week.

It's Architecture Week too, and for those who can't afford the Heritage Ball, the AIA NY's annual benefit ball on Thursday, the Center for Architecture throws an awesome after party with a more palatable admission.

Great article by the prolific Robert Sullivan (he's got two articles in this month's Vogue too, interesting...)about heightened bike and pedestrian conflicts as more and more people take to their feet to get themselves around. Hooray for more people, boo for still not enough space. Yes to a physically protected bike lane on the Brooklyn Bridge roadways to alleviate the congestion on the bike/ped path.

Speaking of which, maybe this article will inspire folks to enter the Biking Rules PSA (i.e., Public Service Announcement) Competition ending this Tuesday. You can win up to $4,000 in cash, and will be eligible for the Biking Rules Film Festival at BAM. What are you waiting for?

I own a PS2, GC and Wii. I have never in my life been impressed by the visuals of any PS2 game (except the artistic design of Okami) and I own or have played almost every single PS2 game vouched for here. I have, however, been impressed by the technical and artistic prowess of many GC and Wii games.

Any person able and willing to use their God given gift of human reason can see than the Wii and its predecessor are light years greater than the PS2.

Arche Tree Clothing - New Web Design

Unleaded Software has completed the initial web design for Arche Tree Clothing, a Denver-based clothing company. Arche Tree Clothing offers unique designs on 100% organic apparel. They also have other green initiatives including a tree planting program. Their website will be hosted by Beanstalk Solar Hosting, an offshoot of Unleaded Software. The website will be built around the Magento e-commerce platform and features an ‘organic, natural’ web design. The website is planned to launch in October 2008.

The web design features a futuristic background and hybrid (flash + html) homepage. Defining the design
What I learned over the years as a designer is that I need to feel 100% convinced and happy about what I have each time I look at it. If that's not the case then chances are it won't be a winner. Not easy, as I am my own worst client. It may be hard to believe but that's exactly what happened in my initial design. After a week I wasn't pleased anymore of the result. You have to take a look at this. Who would've thought that the DOT would make this a possibility in NYC? How many times have we lamented the lack of pedestrian space in the most congested and most visited parts of the city? More space for pedestrians in NYC - it was just a twinkle in the eye as recently as two years ago. Incredible - congratulations to the DOT.

It hasn't been quiet on this front, rather, extraordinarily busy. I joined Transportation Alternatives as its planning director at the end of April and have been flat out doing all sorts of public space-oriented stuff (cos streets are NYC's largest public spaces, no?).

Anyhoo, the impetus for writing now is that we launched a design competition to re-design the intersection of 4th Avenue and 9th Street in Brooklyn. We're looking for fresh new approaches to re-imagining our streets are healthy, sustainable, safe, and livable places. Come on, how many times have you complained about our streets as yet another vehicle refused to yield to you in the crosswalk? This is your chance to wave the pencil and come up with something better.

Update on Silver Spring

I posted a few years ago about an innovative re-use of a parking lot in Silver Spring. Field turf was laid down and a public space was born. Some of the reasons for its success is its location in a central site, surrounded by amenities.

A friend just sent over a picture of the plaza's continued use. Here's what she said:

Everyone there seemed so happy and relaxed; it's almost a rare scene in a town (DC area) where people are so work-centered and don't seem to slow down so much. (I'm sure it's worse in NYC.) I'm sure the fact that it was one of the first warm spring days didn't hurt. There were kids playing ball, families having picnics, couples having romantic moments, people just sitting around reading, and there was even a "Save Darfur" parade/rally that showed up while I was there.

They've really turned the area into something really special with stores, restaurants, fountains and tons places to sit and relax. People were just sitting around shooting the breeze. Kids were playing in pretty safe areas away from traffic. They even closed the road at the bottom of the turf and it was taken over by skateboarders (who are usually kicked out of public places like these). Even when a brief shower came through, no one ran screaming for their cars, really. They just seemed to go underneath covered spots to cheerfully wait it out. I don't know how to explain it, but it just seemed so different than what I remember as the "norm" around here.

Whoo-hoo, Silver Spring! Just one little suggestion just based on this photograph: it would be great if the retailed with the wall adjacent to this space made their space more transparent and provided some amenities for the people in this space. It looks like there's a cafe terrace overlooking the space...why not bring the cafe down to the plaza?

BTW, the DOT is launching a Public Plaza Initiative for New York City, so we have our own opportunity to take under-utilized space and convert it into something amazing. There are so many neighborhoods I can think of where the streets and parking need to go on a major diet. The DOT will be seeking applications for this project starting in June, I believe. Here are some tips on what the DOT will be interested in seeing from the application, based on the experience with the demonstration project in DUMBO. Get organized!

Supermarkets in NYC

The convenience of having access to fresh food on a regular basis in New York City has officially become a privilege. A new Department of City Planning study has found that underserved communities are the most likely to have supermarkets close. The New York Times covers the study as well. I don't have an understanding of the economic formula that is behind this phenomenon, other than the simple assumption that rents are outpacing margins from food prices.

About a month ago, at the Design Trust for Public Space's Paul Goldberger and Danny Meyers conversation (I believe soon you will be able to download the MP3 from the Design Trust site), there was the idea floated of providing inclusionary rents for small businesses in business districts or main street type areas as a way to maintain community character. Maybe there should be something for supermarkets as well, even if they are not in business districts. There are many micro-communities throughout New York that would not qualify as having a main street. These supermarkets do not have to be "super" either - as long as they did provide produce, not just packaged foods which are now available drug stores and gas stations, and they should be accessible without a car for the most vulnerable populations.
